Upendo gives young orphaned girls new life and hope through care and protection. The organization provides for their physical and emotional needs through shelter, schooling, nurturing and love.
But day to day survival is not enough; people need hope.
Education is the seed for a better future, not just for them, but for Kenya as well. (Please see the Economist articles, on another page, which demonstrate that education is the key to a better future and Africa’s rising).
Upendo provides its 40 orphaned children with an education, and please note that Upendo runs as well a primary school for 87 children from poor families !
Upendo pupils lead academically in their division and are in the top ten in the district of 63 primary schools!
Upendo is currently working towards opening a secondary school that will accept both boarding and day students, which help them on their path to self-sustainability.
Description
We need to help Eunice to safeguard Upendo and the tremendous work that has been made, and to help them to grow and thrive!
Our aim is to raise money for the children of Upendo Children Rehabilitation Centre (UCRC), not only here in Ireland, and in Europe, but also in America and Canada.
The funds will be used for infrastructure and educational needs.

Upendo History
UPENDO CHILDREN REHABILITATION CENTRE (UCRC) was founded in 1997 and registered as an NGO in 1999. The idea emanated from the founder Mrs. Eunice W. Kamotho who sympathised with orphans particularly attributed to HIV/AIDS whose basic needs had nobody to meet. A group of like minded persons joined hands and helped to provide for these orphaned/destitute children with food, clothing, medication, education as well as counselling. Through this outreach program, over 30 children have benefited while living with loving relatives of foster parents. UCRC has managed to educate some of these through universities and colleges.
However in 2000 the group realized there was another category of orphans whose life was vulnerable to abuse in hands of the carers. It became imperative to save these orphans by providing accommodation. The local government kindly provided a piece of land in Central kenya, Murang'a District, Kiharu Division, Gikindu Sub-location for this purpose.
In 2002 the group, with the help of local community managed to construct basic facilities e.g. a dormitory for 20 children, toilets, a bathroom and a kitchen.
On 1st October 2002 the first intake of 7 orphans aged between 8 months and 3-years were admitted under the care of a House-mother, an assistant and a night guard. The founder took charge of the daily management.
Since 2002, Upendo has expanded to become the home of 40 orphan girls and a primary school for 87 additional local children.
Upendo is run by a dedicated staff consisting of a social worker, two housemothers, three farm assistants, two night guards, and 7 teachers along with a Board of Directors.
Four classrooms have been constructed in addition to volunteer quarters and a water tank since 2002.
Upendo’s goal of self-sufficiency reaches back to 2007 when a posho (grain) mill was purchased to allow Upendo to mill the corn they grow and to process corn for local villagers to increase revenue. The school is currently in the process of building a fish farm on their land to help decrease food costs while selling excess fish to the local community. Finally, additional revenue is received from the day students who are charged tuition fees (based on their family’s ability to pay) to attend Upendo Primary School.

Upendo’s Plan for the Future
The most pressing need is the construction of an additional dormitory. The one originally meant to accommodate 20 little girls now takes 40 (most of them teens), 3 house mothers and a Social Worker.
Development and education for the pupils is the priority. Upendo plans to construct and operate a secondary school and will begin to accept boarding students for both primary and secondary school.
Tuition fees will help Upendo realize the goal of self-sufficiency, and a substantial scholarship fund will be developed to offset tuition costs for low-income families. Agricultural projects will continue to increase at Upendo’s small farm in order to reduce food costs for the growing number of children being fed at Upendo.
Please see the videos and pictures kindly provided by Melanie Pessin, President and Founder at East Africa Children's Hope (E.A.C.H). Her comments provide us with valuable information.
